What You’ll Do 

The Water/Wastewater Maintenance Crew Leader position involves the responsibility for supervising a crew in the performance of semi-skilled, manual work involving a variety of maintenance and installation tasks on water mains, hydrants and meters, water and wastewater treatment equipment and pump stations, and electrical and mechanical building systems. A Water/Wastewater Maintenance Crew Leader is a lead and participate position. The work environment is team-based, motivational and fast-paced. Our mission is to provide high-quality, environmentally-sound, efficient, reliable, and affordable water and sewer services to the people who live, work, and visit Livingston County.

Examples of Important and Essential Duties – Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Supervises and participates in the installation, maintenance, and repair of water and sewer lines, and related water and wastewater system components such as lift stations, pumps, motors, valves, manholes, generators, and other equipment.
  • Supervise and participates in the repair and maintenance of other water and wastewater mechanical and electrical equipment;
  • Supervises and makes service taps and installs new service lines on water and sewer mains;
  • Maintains work related records and reports;
  • Pressure tests and chlorinates water mains and flushes hydrants and operates bleeders;
  • Supervises and participates in the operation of motor and other equipment related to the installation, maintenance and repair of water distribution and wastewater collection systems including back hoes, mini excavator, trucks, vacuum truck, air compressors, drills and lathes, sewer cameras, power tools and locating devices;
  • Performs smoke testing studies, manhole inspections and sewer inspections, including private property inspections, and maintains work related records and reports as part of the Authority’s sewer preventative maintenance program and infiltration/inflow (I/I) reduction program;
  • May perform other manual labor related to water and wastewater systems maintenance and repair;
  • May work various hours and respond to after-hour emergency requests as required.

 Who You Are 

  • Working in a team environment, ability to maintain good working relationships, train crewmembers in the various water/wastewater maintenance tasks and supervise the work of others.
  • Ability to layout and plan the work to ensure maximum efficiency.
  • Communicating openly, honestly, and professionally with co-workers, supervisors, and all others.
  • Working alongside fellow employees to complete assigned tasks sometimes under adverse working conditions to meet goals set forth by management.
  • Ability to safely and effectively use tools and operate equipment related to water and wastewater systems maintenance and repair; Ability to perform semi-skilled and other tasks related to water transmission/distribution and wastewater collection systems;
  • Basic computer skills for record-keeping purposes; ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions; ability to perform heavy labor under all weather conditions; ability to work in confined spaces; dependability; physical condition commensurate to the demands of the position.

What You Need 

Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.  A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be:

  • Graduation from high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid New York driver’s license.
  • Four years of full-time, paid experience in the maintenance and construction of a water distribution system and/or wastewater collection system, general facilities, general construction, environmental science and/or related work.
  • Must possess a New York State grade C and D Water Operator Certification at the time of appointment or obtain same within 18 months of appointment.

  • Salary range is $30.32 – $33.48 and is negotiable based on experience.

  • The retirement plan is through the New York State Employee Retirement System.

About Livingston County Water & Sewer Authority 

The Livingston County Water and Sewer Authority is a public benefit corporation established in 1995 by an act of New York State Legislature. The Authority currently serves over 7,000 water and sewer customers in the Village of Livonia and portions of the Towns of Avon, Caledonia, Conesus, Geneseo, Groveland, Leicester, Lima, Livonia, Mount Morris, Sparta and Springwater. We currently operate and maintain three wastewater treatment plants, approximately 60 miles of sanitary sewer collection and conveyance piping, 45 sewage pump stations, one water treatment plant, approximately 140 miles of water distribution and transmission piping, 13 water storage tanks, 4 booster pump stations, and 7 re-chlorination stations.
